The Definition Problem
Founders often use the terms "Coach," "Mentor," and "Consultant" interchangeably. But they are very different tools for different problems. Hiring the wrong one leads to frustration. Business coaching for entrepreneurs is a specific discipline distinct from consulting.
The Consultant: "Do it for me"
A Consultant is an expert you hire to solve a specific technical problem. "Fix my supply chain." "Build my financial model." They bring external answers and execution power. If you need a small business operations consultant, you want answers.
The Coach: "Help me do it"
A Coach focuses on *you*, the leader. They don't give you the answers; they ask better questions to help you find them. They work on your mindset, your leadership style, and your blind spots. They are your mirror. If you have a business problem (e.g., falling sales), hire a Consultant. If you have a personal bottleneck (e.g., fear of delegation), hire a Coach. Often, successful founders have both.
